Biographical / Historical

The Ezekiel Harris House located at 1822 Broad Street was built in 1797 by a prominent tobacco merchant. Records suggest that Harris fought for the Americans in the Revolutionary war before becoming a tobacco merchant. He came to Georgia from Edgefield, South Carolina in the late 1790’s, purchased more than 300 acres from Leonard Marbury, which he named Harrisburg and built his home overlooking the Savannah River. This house is an outstanding example of late 18th-century architecture. It was originally part of Harrisburg, a town that competed with Augusta for the trade of area tobacco planters. Said to be "... the finest eighteenth-century house surviving in Georgia..." by The Smithsonian Guide to Historic America, the Ezekiel Harris House is an outstanding example of early Federal style architecture.

The Augusta Richmond County Historical Society purchased the property in 1929 and restored it. In the early mid-20th century, the Harris House was assumed to be the Mackay Trading Post. However, in the 1970's it was discovered to be the Ezekiel Harris House.
