Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of yearbooks, scrapbooks, photographs, and administrative materials such as minutes, correspondence, and financial records that document the history of the Augusta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This collection primarily consists of yearbooks and scrapbooks, with both containing lists of members, newspaper clippings, and the general happenings of the organization since its inception in 1892. The collection also contains Regents/Chapter President histories that document the lives and accomplishments of every DAR Augusta chapter regent since the chapter's inception.

Collection is open for research. However, two scrapbooks are currently off-limits for researchers due to extensive mold contamination. All other materials are open for research purposes.

Biographical / Historical

The Augusta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was organized on Febuary 20th, 1892 as an organization dedicated to the preservation of revolution-era history in the Augusta area. As the 19th chapter in the nation and the 3rd in the state of Georgia upon its founding, the organization began with sixteen local Augusta women who met regularly at the Planter's Hotel in Augusta. In 1900, the DAR purchased and led the restoration of Meadow Garden, the original home of Declaration of Independence signee and local Augustan, George Walton. To the modern day, the chapter continues to promote American and Revolutionary history through educational programming and outreach in the Augusta area.

Abstract

Collection is comprised of minutes, scrapbooks, yearbooks, comprehensive histories, and general adminstrative materials documenting the Augusta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) since its inception in 1892.

Arrangement

This collection is primarily arranged in four distinct series: 1) Scrapbooks, 2) Regents History Files, 3) Administrative Files, and 4) Yearbooks. Each section is self explanatory with their contents. Administrative files is divided into two subseries: meeting minutes and bylaws and more General Documentation.

Original order was kept at the item level when possible. Alphabetical order was imposed at the folder level to enhance organization and searchability.

Custodial History

The collection was previously unofficially donated (no paperwork signed) in 2016. It was never processed. The collection was officially donated (paperwork signed) in 2020.

An accural of this collection was added by the organization in August of 2026 and processed into the collection by Aaron Hayes and Gillian Braiman.
