Biographical / Historical

Alice F. Stewart was born on November 22, 1881 in Milford, Ohio to John and Abine Stewart. After graduating from high school, Stewart held the position of post mistress for ten years. In 1914, she entered the Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as an operating nurse at the hospital until World War I began. Stewart volunteered and became a member of an Anglo-French Red Cross Nursing Unit. She spent the war years, November 1915 to January 1919, at Arc-en-Barrios, Haute Marne France nursing wounded soldiers.

After War World I ended, Stewart accepted the operating room supervisor position at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. She held this position from November 1919 until 1922 when she left University Hospital for a year. When Stewart returned to Augusta, she assumed the position of Director of Nurses at University Hospital, a position she held for twenty-four years. After her resignation from the directorship, Miss Stewart became a nursing counselor and advised hundreds of nursing students during the next fourteenth years. At the University Hospital’s School of Nursing homecoming of 1958, she announced her permanent retirement from nursing in her speech.

Stewart was also active in the Georgia State Nursing Association where she held many offices including president in 1932 and 1933. She spent her life conducting social and philanthropic work for the Augusta community. Miss Stewart died on July 23, 1974 in Augusta, Georgia.
