Biographical / Historical
Gerald Robins, 1924-2010, was an educator and higher education professional most known for his tenure as president of the legacy institutions, Junior College of Augusta and Augusta College, of Augusta University from 1957-1970. Robins, born in Arkansas, received undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock and the University of Georgia. Robins led the transition of the former Augusta Arsenal property into a new site for the Junior College of Augusta. Under his direction, the college became Augusta College, a senior baccalaureate-granting institution, in 1967. Robins was president during major cultural shifts during the 1960’s, including the desegregation of Georgia colleges and universities and the proliferation of student protests throughout the wider United States. Robins’ wife, Fay Kennan Robins, was also an active participant in the Augusta College community and a member of the Faculty Wives Club. In 1970, Robins took a position as President of Texas A&I University, now known as Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
