Biographical / Historical

Philemon Tracy (June 27, 1831 – September 18, 1862) was an American lawyer, judge, newspaper editor, and politician from Georgia. Born in Macon, Georgia, he was the son of Judge Edward Dorr Tracy Sr. and a nephew of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Archibald Campbell. He graduated from Yale College in 1850 and returned to Macon to practice law. Tracy became editor of the Macon Telegraph and served as a probate judge before being elected to the Georgia Legislature in 1860. During the Civil War, he served as a major in the 6th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in July 1862 near Richmond, Virginia, and later killed at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland at age 31.

Benson Family was a prominent local family active in civic, cultural, and business life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Berry Greenwood Benson (1843–1923) served in the Confederate Army, worked as an accountant and cotton broker, and was involved in veterans’ organizations and community affairs. The family participated in Augusta’s musical, theatrical, and social circles.
