Biographical or Historical Information
King Mill (1881-2001) was incorporated in 1881 as the John P. King Manufacturing Company, and was located along the Augusta Canal. Charles Estes served as the company president from 1881-1901, and hired John D. Hill to design the building of the Mill in 1882. The Mill was completed in 1883, and operated with 30,000 spindles, with 60,288 spindles and 1,812 looms by 1900. Spartan Mills purchased King Mill in 1968, but closed in 2001.
In 2001, the Augusta Canal Authority purchased the property in order to preserve the building. The Canal Authority later leased the building to Standard Textile. In 2018, the Canal Authority sold the building to Cape Augusta, which turned the old mill into apartments.
