Biographical / Historical
Houghton Elementary School, originally named the Houghton School, was established in 1853 and became the first public elementary school in Augusta in the 1890’s. It was started in honor of John Houghton, who in his will established a $4,000 fund and a small plot of land to the city of Augusta to establish a public school. In the 1890’s the Houghton School was incorporated into the newly chartered public school system. The original building was burned down in the Great Fire of 1916, and the current building was operating until 2000. In 2007, the building became the Heritage Academy which is still operating and providing education to the children of Augusta to this day.
