Biographical / Historical

University Hospital in Augusta traces its origins to 1818, when it was established as a combined poorhouse and hospital on the 100 block of Greene Street. Originally known as City Hospital, it provided local physicians with opportunities for medical training and served as the first home of the Medical College of Georgia until the construction of the Old Medical College Building on Telfair Street in 1835. In addition to this whites-only institution, Freedman’s Hospital—later known as Lamar Hospital—was founded to provide care for African American patients. These two segregated facilities were consolidated into a single institution in 1915, which was subsequently named “University Hospital” in recognition of its association with the medical college.

Amid political and institutional changes in the mid-twentieth century, the Medical College of Georgia separated from University Hospital and established its own teaching facility, Talmadge Hospital. In 1970, University Hospital opened a new, modern facility equipped with state-of-the-art technology, marking a significant advancement in its capacity to deliver care.

In 2021, University Hospital was acquired by Piedmont Healthcare, an Atlanta-based system, and now operates under the Piedmont name.
