Biographical or Historical Information
Freeman Walker (1780-1827) was a U.S. senator and lawyer who moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1797. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1807 to 1811 and was mayor of August in 1818, 1819, and again in 1823. He's buried in the Walker family cemetary which is on the grounds of the old Augusta arsenal, now the campus of Augusta University.
Freeman Walker's son, William H.T. Walker, served in the Civil War as a confederate major general. W.H.T. Walker was killed in action during the 1864 Atlanta campaign.
The bulk of the collection consists of records from Walker descendents, particularly H.M. Walker, Lieutenant Commander of the U.S. Navy (1882-1962), the grandson of William H.T. Walker. Hugh McLean Walker was born to William Henry Talbot Walker and Caroline Fowle Walker on October 24th, 1882. He married Elsie Dodge in 1906. Upon his first wife's death in 1925, he remarried to Margie Belle Shackleford. H.M. Walker died on June 6th, 1962, at the age of 79, and was buried in the Walker family cemetery.
