Ambrose Ransom Wright (1826–1872) was a prominent Augusta, Georgia, attorney, Confederate major general, and newspaper editor. Born in Louisville, Georgia, Wright read law under Governor Herschel V. Johnson and established a successful legal practice in Augusta by 1860. Though initially a political moderate who opposed secession, he embraced the Confederate cause in 1861, rising from private to brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia, where he notably commanded a Georgia brigade at Antietam and Gettysburg. Promoted to major general late in the war, he directed Confederate forces defending Augusta and Savannah against Sherman's March to the Sea. In the post-war era, Wright returned to Augusta and purchased the Augusta Chronicle & Sentinel, using his role as editor-in-chief to fiercely oppose Radical Reconstruction and organize white conservative political resistance in Georgia. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1872 but died in Augusta at age 46 before taking office; he is buried in the city's historic Magnolia Cemetery.
