Biographical / Historical

Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School were established in 1874 to serve Augusta’s growing Catholic community. Temporary buildings were used until the current structure was built between 1897 and 1900. The church and school were vacated in 1971 and remained empty until the Knox Foundation redeveloped the site into Sacred Heart Cultural Center in 1987, which continues to operate as a concert hall and cultural venue today.
