Biographical / Historical
Octavia Walton Le Vert (1811–1877) was a prominent American author and socialite born near Augusta, Georgia, and later associated with Mobile, Alabama. A granddaughter of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, she became one of the first Southern women to gain national literary recognition. Known for her influential salon and wide social network, she entertained leading political and literary figures of the mid-19th century. Her best-known work, Souvenirs of Travel (1857), drew on her European tours, where she was received at royal courts. Later in life, she supported preservation efforts for George Washington’s Mount Vernon and, after the Civil War diminished her fortunes, returned to Georgia, where she died in relative obscurity.
