This collection contains materials relating to the Augusta Philomathic Club, what was considered the oldest women's organization in Augusta. Materials include yearbooks, academic papers, correspondence, scrapbooks, minute books, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other club related materials. The date of materials span from 1985 - 1995.

Biographical / Historical

The Philomathic Club of Augusta, founded in 1895, was a women's club dedicated to the intellectual enrichment of Augusta's women. The club dedicated time to meeting, discussing, and writing on topics related to literature, philosophy, history, and other academic ventures during a time where southern women did not have the oppritunitiy to attend colleges and higher education.

This collection is primarily arranged alphabetically at the folder level. Original order was maintained when possible.

Custodial History

This material, originally two different collections (MSS 011 and MSS 203) , were combined for concision and unity. The entire collection is now listed under MSS 203. The original accessions are kept seperate via accession number within the collection.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The first donation of material was donated to Reese Library Special Collections, Augusta University by Ruby McCrary Pfadenhauer on 12/29/1980. Second accrual, Acc# 1981.16, donated by Albert von Kamp Gary, July 10, 1981. Added to existing collection MSS 011 by Carol Waggoner-Angleton 12/01/2006. The donor of the third donation, 1993.26, is currently unknown.
