Biographical or Historical Information
Oliver General Hospital started life as the Forrest-Ricker Hotel, a luxery hotel along the lines of the Bon-Air. Druing World War II the hotel was taken over as a hospital for the United States Army. When Eisenhower Hoptial was opened on Fort Gordon, Oliver General functioned as the Veterans Aministration hospital until the opening of the Charlie Norwood VA Hospital in downtown Augusta. The hotel remained unoccupied for several years until acquired by Augusta State University. The intention had been to renivate the building for student housing but the project proved too extensive. Photographs of the hospital prior to demolition are in the Reese Library Loose Photographs collection
