Biographical or Historical Information
Material was donated by Mrs. Nancy Cumming Connolly. Deed of gift was finalized in 2012 Mr. Hugh Connolly. Material was rehoused in July/August 2012 and process in May 2021.
Papers were donated to Augusta College (Augusta State University) by Joseph B. Cumming.. Note that some items appear to be missing from the original index, and that there also seem to be items that were unaccounted for. This means that this index numbers and labels do not match what has been written on them for the previous index. Original order has been maintained but it is possible that differences in interpretation of aboutness account for the missing entries. A record of items recorded in the original index, but that I did not find, has been included and labeled as “missing.”
Mr. Joseph B. Cumming (b. 1894-d. April 11, 1983) was a lawyer and a legislator in the Georgia House of Representatives, a local historian, and board member for many notable companies, chief among them the Georgia Railroad Bank. The Cumming family is among the founding families of Augusta and Mr. Cumming was a direct descendent of Thomas Cumming the first intendant (mayor) of Augusta.
