Biographical or Historical Information
Augusta University is a public university and academic medical center located in Augusta, Georgia. The university originated out of the Academy of Richmond County, founded in 1783, and which began offering post-secondary studies in 1791.
In 1910, the Academy of Richmond County came under the control of the Richmond County Board of Education, which added a formal fifth year of college preparatory coursework. This fifth year evolved into the Junior College of Augusta in 1925, and the school was moved to a location on Baker Avenue. Due to the growth of the school, the college acquired the Augusta Arsenal, recently abandoned by the U.S. military, and this became the campus of the current Augusta University. In 1958, the Junior College of Augusta joined the University system of Georgia and became Augusta College. In 1963, the College transitioned to a four-year institution.
In 1996, Augusta College acquired university status and became Augusta State University. In 2011, the Medical College of Georgia and Augusta State University consolidated, becoming Georgia Regents University in 2013. In 2015, the University was rebranded under the current name, Augusta University.
