Barnett Business Ledger
Scope and Contents
This item is a business record ledger that documents the cotton business dealings of the Barnett family in Georgia and the wider early United States in the early 19th century. The book is primarily documented by Phinzy Barnett, a presumed member of the Augusta-based Barnett family. The book also includes letters written to George Hargrave, John Carmichael, the Caldwell and the Phinzy families of Augusta. Most of the book is retroatively covered in pasted newspaper clippings and art, depicting poetry, world landmarks, and short stories. It is clear that many of the original business letters within the ledger have been covered with such clippings, with the first 20 pages or so of the text showcasing clear sides of glue residue from clipping removal. Most entries are addressed from Savannah, but are presumably Augusta based due to the booming cotton industry at the time.
