Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of 3 anonymous local business ledgers that document the sale of clothing items, food, and miscellaneous houseware materials. The books also include shipping reports from both Savannah and Augusta, as well as business operational reports. These ledgers also list the names of prominent Augusta families who used the business, such as the Cashins, Caldwells, Hicks, Flemings, Cummings, Calhouns, Hendricks, among others. The lists of names also include prominent doctors in the Augusta area. The book also includes both tab and cash payments, as well as the signatures of the business managers as they signed off on purchases.

Collection is open for research. However, due to the fragility and potential mold damage of the volumes, the books must be handled by the special collections staff, and, under certain circumstances, handled with gloves and personal protective equipment by patrons.

While the ledger volumes do not have proper provenance or indication of their origins, their subject matter denotes that they were most likely used by both contracted merchants of prominent Augusta families and local buisnesses.

Custodial History

This collection was originally three seperate collections, ARCHS 004. ARCHS 016, and ARCHS 018. However, due to their extremely similar subject matter and general content, the three volumes were combined into a single collection.

This material was transferred to the Augusta Richmond County Historical Society by the Augusta Richmond County Museum on 02/14/1978.
