Biographical or Historical Information

Joshua Porter Woodall (known professionally as J. Porter or J.P. Woodall) moved to Augusta in 1911 as a cotton buyer or agent for Weil Brothers of Montgomery Alabama.  Woodall would continue to act as the agent or manager for Weil Brothers in Augusta until his death.  He was made a member of the Augusta Cotton Exchange in 1911,   Immortalized in the Chronicle as the buyer of the first bale of the 1915 cotton crop, he was elected to the board of directors of the Augusta Cotton exchange in 1916 and served as president from 1920 to 1923 according to newspaper reports.  Woodall served as president of the cotton exchange during the filing of a petition which surrendered the Exchange’s charter, dissolved the exchange and reformed it as the Cotton Exchange of Augusta.  Legalities aside, the building continued to be referred to as the Augusta Cotton Exchange.  While representing the Weil Brothers, Woodall was also an officer in several cotton warehouses, the Allied Compress Company Inc, the Union Cotton Warehouse and in 1923, president of the Atlantic States Warehouses.  By his death on May 10, 1925 he was a fixture in Augusta Cotton and an active member in local clubs and organizations
