John Craig Cranston book collection
Scope and Contents
These books were collected by John Craig Cranston and have connections with important Augustans or Augusta residents. Publication dates range from 1830 to 1920. Families are represented by Henry Cumming Julia Cumming, Joseph B. Cumming, Katherine Hubbell Cumming, Janet Cumming, W. R. Houston, James H. Randall, Addison Newton Teague, J.P. Verdery, and Catherine Verdery. This collection includes a handwritten manuscript by Clara St. Myers, who was probably from Brooklyn Georgia. More research must be done to determine if these are original works. Also of interest is an illuminated presentation copy of Joseph B. Cumming’s speeches given on the 50th wedding anniversary of Cumming and Katherine Hubbell Cumming.

Biographical or Historical Information
This material was collected by John Craig Cranston (January 26, 1926-February 2, 2011) and donated to Special Collections by his family and the executor of the Cranston estate in the summer of 2011. Cranston a life long resident of Augusta, Georgia, graduate of Clemson, and Major U.S. Air Force reserve, founded Cranston Robertson and Whitehurst P.C., an engineering and surveying firm, in 1963. This would later be the parent company of the present day Cranston Group P.C. Cranston was involved in many civic groups including Historic Augusta, the Augusta Museum of History, Board of the Cemetery of the Village of Summerville, the Trustees of the Academy of Richmond County and the Society of Colonial Wars in Georgia. He was also involved in organizations of Highlands, North Carolina where he was a part-time resident.
