This material was digitized during the creation of 13-05 Jaguar History interviews.  Mr. Vanover gave a verbal consent for these materials to be digitized and shared for personal study and research.  Researchers intending other uses must apply to Mr. Vanover for permission to publish. Marvin Vanover was Director of Athletics (1963-1988) and Chairman, Department of Health and Physical Education (1965-1991).  He was awarded tenure in 1968 and was made full professor in 1970.  Vanover molded the athletics program as the institution grew from the Junior College of Augusta to Augusta College.  His late 1960s -1970s teams were the first basketball teams in the school’s history to win a conference title.  As Chairman, Vanover oversaw the building of two athletic facilities, developed the sports offereings of Augusta College and worked statewide to promote Georgia Basketball as a Peach Belt Commissioner.  The city of Augusta honored the coach with his own Marvin Vanover Day on February 14, 1970.  For a further listing of his titles and awards, consult the GRU Biographical Directory
