Scope and Contents

The Tolliver Dillard family papers documents the family of Mr. Dillard as well as his military history and life in Augusta, Georgia. The collection consists of a diploma awarded to Tolliver Dillard from the Medical College of Georgia on March 2, 1858 with transcription of Latin.  Includes metal presentation tube.  Material in box includes: List of books read,  1832 Burke County land plat and bill of sale, Will of Tolliver Dillard Sr., 1862, Tolliver Dillard deposition for exemption of service, Dillard substitute soldier documents,  Officer of the Day Report Fairgrounds Hospital no. 2 October 4, 1864. Tolliver Dillard US loyalty oath, Will of Tolliver Dillard 1893, Carte d’visites of  J.A. Scott, ,Emma Trotti and Carrie Scott tin-type Allen W. H. Carter and Anna Cook, identity verification for Bessie Holomon, Daughters of Confederates, family papers, photographs, a scrapbook, etc. All items except diploma, presentation tube and transcription were housed in wooden box.  Photographs taken by Dr. Randy Pace are included in digitized surrogate. Items are from the late 1800's.

Biographical or Historical Information

Tolliver Dillard, born in November 1824, was a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia (Augusta, Georiga) in September 1858. He was the son of Taliaferro Dillard, Sr. and Pheobe Watkins Dillard. Tolliver married Anna Cook around 1860. Anna died during the birth of their son in 1868. Their children were Mary Lou Dillard, Carrie Carswell Dillard, Annie Jones Dillard, and Tolliver Dillard, Jr. William H. Vawter was born in Winchester County, TN in 1886. He was the son of Jesse Vawter and Annie Dillard Vawter and the grandson of Tolliver Dillard. Mr. Vawter lived in Augusta, Ga for 47 years and worked at the Augusta Arsenal. He was married to Mrs. Ruth Veel Vawter and they had four children.

Appraisal Information

Date of donation unknown, collection was split. Originally, only the diploma was described under the control of 10-06.  Upon discovery that the donation included more material, the material was located and added to 10-06 in September 2012.
