Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of several manuscripts by Elliott Serotta that document the history of the Jewish community in the Augusta area and the Jewish Community Center in celebration of its Bar-Mitzvah. The manuscripts primarily consist of articles written for various newspapers throughout the Southern United States, Speeches, and general writings for commemorative events for the Jewish community in Augustas.

Biographical / Historical
Augusta, Georgia — Jewish settlement in Augusta began in the early nineteenth century, with the first recorded Jewish resident arriving in 1802. A formal community was established in 1846 with the founding of Congregation B’nai Israel, one of Georgia’s earliest Jewish congregations. Over time, additional institutions were formed, including Adas Yeshurun Synagogue, benevolent societies, and communal organizations that supported religious, educational, and social life. In the twentieth century, the Jewish Community Center of Augusta became a central gathering place for cultural and civic engagement. Jewish life in Augusta continues into the twenty-first century through active congregations and institutions such as the Augusta Jewish Museum, reflecting a longstanding and evolving presence in the region.
