Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of materials relating to the Coleman and Catlett families, collected by Dr. Warren Soleman in the course of geneaolgical research into the families. Collection materials include financial records, legal documents, and correspondence from various members of the Catlett and Coleman families, as well as the later materials of Dr. Warren Coleman, including his geneaology research materials, and correspondence relating to his genealogical research.

Biographical or Historical Information

John Catlett married Lucy Coleman in Richmond County, Georgia on July 7, 1797. John Coleman (1753-1837) came from Caroline County, VA about 1815, and settled in Fayette County, Kentucky. Coleman's son, Lindsay Coleman moved to Augusta, Ga. Lindsay Coleman (1776-1821) was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia in 1776. He married Sarah Stubbs Coleman (1778-1835), and the couple had three children: Frances Coleman Marshall (1798-1849), Mary Ann Coleman Warren (1801-1870), and James Lindsay Coleman (1807-1859). James Lindsay Coleman (1807-1859) was born in 1807, the son of Lindsay Coleman and Sarah Stubbs Coleman. He married Emmeline Twiggs Coleman John Scott Coleman (1837-1892)  was born at Bedford plantation near Augusta, Ga. in Richmond County, on October 10, 1837, the son of James Lindsay Coleman and Emmeline Twiggs Coleman. Coleman received his early education in Augutsa, and studied medicine at the University of Virginia, and later at Jefferson Medical College, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in March of 1857. During the American Civil War, he served as a Surgeon in the Confederate Army. Coleman married Carrie Wyatt Starke, and later Hetty McEwen, with whom he had two sons, Thomas Davis Coleman, and Warren Coleman.
