Biographical or Historical Information
This collection was transferred to Special Collections on May 2, 2009 from Berry College Archives, they having received it from Anne Combs of Lexington, Kentucky in February 2009. Anne Combs was a cousin of Shirley Moragne Fleming.
Shirley Moragne Fleming (December 2, 1929-March 10, 2005) was the daughter of Berry and Anne Fleming of Augusta GA. Berry Fleming was a novelist who was considered one of best of his generation of Southern writers. Nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990 for Captain Bennett’s Folly, his best known novel was Colonel Effingham’s Raid.
A graduate of Smith College, Ms. Fleming was a writer and music critic. Most of her professional career was spent in New York, chiefly as the editor of Musical America from 1967-1991, but she also wrote for High Fidelity, the New York Times and the New York Post, among other publications, and was a respected judge of piano and violin competitions with an international reputation. Ms. Fleming had returned to Augusta, GA at the time of her death and was survived by numerous cousins, one of whom was Anne Combs.
It is assumed that Ms. Combs first offered this collection to Berry College because of a link between Daisy Beldon Berry Fleming, Ms Fleming’s grandmother, and Martha Berry, the founder of Berry College, but the exact link was not specified and must still be discovered.
