Lamar and Rucker family bible
Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of a single volume published Bible, belonging to the Lamar family. The Bible, entitled The Comprehensive Bible: containing the Old and New Testaments, according to the authorized version, with the various readings and marginal notes usually printed therewith, was published by J.B. Lippincott & Company in Philadelphia, PA, in 1859. Between the Old and New Testaments, the volume includes a few pages to record marriages, births, and deaths of family members. Marriages recorded within this volume include the marriage of James S. Lamar and Mary M. Rucker on June 19th, 1856, and the marriage of James S. Lamar and Sallie May Ford on December 14th, 1865. The following births were recorded in the volume: James Sanford Lamar (1829), Mary M. Rucker (1833), Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857), Philip Lamar (1859), and Mary Margaret Lamar (1860). The following deaths are also recorded in the volume: Mary Rucker Lamar (1864), Philip Lamar (1882), and Mary Margaret Lamar (1883).

Biographical or Historical Information
James Sanford Lamar (1829-1908) was born in Gwinnett County, GA on May 18, 1829. Lamar studied law and was admitted to the bar in Columbus, GA in 1850, but later pursued religious work. He attended Bethany College and graduated in 1854, and later became a Reverend in Augusta, GA. He married Mary M. Rucker on June 19th, 1856, and the couple had 3 children: Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857), Philip Lamar (1859), and Mary Margaret Lamar (1860). In 1859, Lamar published "The Organon of Scripture; or, the Inductive Method of Biblical Interpretation."
Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857-1916) was born in Elbert County, GA in October, 1857, the son of James Sanford Lamar and Mary Rucker Lamar. After the death of his mother in 1864, the family moved to Augusta, GA, where Lamar attended Richmond Academy, and lived next door to Woodrow Wilson. Lamar initially attended the University of Georgia in 1874, but completed his undergraduate degree at Bethany College. After graduating in 1877, he studied law at Washington and Lee University, though he did not complete his degree. He returned to Augusta, GA and was admitted to the state bar in April of 1878. Lamar was confirmed to the Supreme Court in 1911 and served for five years. Lamar married Clarinda Huntington Pendleton in 1879, and the couple had three children.
