Biographical or Historical Information
Frederika Bremer (1801-1865) was a Swedish author and feminist reformer. She was born on August 17, 1801, the second daughter of Carl Frederik Bremer (1770-1830) and Birgitta Charlotta Hollstrom (1777-1855). Bremer began writing and seeking publication in 1828, and her books were particularly popular in Britain and the U.S.
A feminist reformer in Sweden, Bremer chose not to marry, and traveled extensively during her lifetime. The letters she wrote to her sister Agathe during her travels in the U.S. were later published as two volumes entitled Homes in the New World. Upon her return to Sweden, she co-founded the Stockholm Women's Society for Children's Care and the Women's Society for the Betterment of Prisoners. Her writing also had impacts on laws pertaining to women, and on the development of a University for women.
Frederika Bremer dies outside of Stockhol on December 31, 1865.
