Biographical or Historical Information
The United Spanish War Veterans was an American veterans organization for veterans who served in the Spanish-American War (1898), the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), and the China Relief Expedition (1898-1901). Originally comprised of several small veterans organizations for each war or military conflict, the organizations merged into a single organization, the United Spanish American War Veterans, from 1904-1906. The organization began in 1899, shortly after the end of the Spanish-American War, and ended in 1992, when the final surviving member of the organization died.
The Archie Butt Camp no. 5, department of Georgia, United Spanish War Veterans was founded on May 17, 1912 at Augusta, Ga. The camp was named for Major Archie Butt, U.S. Army, who died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. The camp had difficulty attracting membership although there were many veterans in the Augusta, Georgia area.
