This collection is comprised of two ledgers documenting Richard Allen's business operatyions in Augusta from 1822-1851. The first ledger contains cash and credit sales, and general buisness reports between 1831-1851. The second is a primary receipt book with copies of all sales, proof of tax records, and general financial dealings between 1822-1847.

Biographical / Historical

While there is extensive avaliable information on local attorney and politician Richard Allen in the early 20th century, there is not a wealth of knowledge of any such individual in the 19th century that these books document. Therefore, the Richard Allen within this collection is presumed to be a prominnent Augusta businessman before the civil war.
