Biographical or Historical Information

Augusta College (now Augusta University) evolved from the Academy of Richmond County, established as a high school in 1783. In 1785, the Academy began offering collegiate level courses. As the student body grew, land was purchased for a seperate campus, and the Junior College of Augusta was established in 1925. In 1957, the Junior College became Augusta College, and moved to it's Walton Way location. In 1958, the College became a part of the University Sytem of Georgia, and became a 4-year College in 1963. Following the transistion to a four-year institution, in 1968, Professor Louise D. Bryant was appointed the Director of Nursing Education at Augusta College. In 1969, the first students graduated from the nursing Associates degree program, and in 1971, after receiving accrediatation from the National League of Nursing, the first class of 25 students graduated from the Augusta College Nursing Program. In 1996, Augusta College became Augusta State University, and in 2008, the new University began offering a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, with the first graduating class completing the degree in 2011. Following the consolidation between Augusta State University and the medical College of Georgia, the nursing programs combined to become the Augusta University College of Nursing.
