Biographical or Historical Information

Fred Parker Farrar (1883-1981) was an amateur photographer and businessman in Augusta, Georgia during the early 20th century. Born on May 20, 1883 in Kansas, he married Marie Louise DuPont (1877-) in Savannah, Georgia in 1906. By 1908, Farrar was living in Augusta, GA, where he partnered with Raymond H. Murphy to start a business, Murphy & Farrar Co., a business which ran for eight years. From 1917-1920, Farrar ran another business, Farrar's Inc. at 720 Broad Street, which sold supplies, film, Kodak cameras, and postcards. Farrar also made panoramas, which he sold in his store. Farrar's wife, Marie Dupont ran Parker's Photo Palace at 808 Broad street in 1907, and then worked for both Murphy & Farrar and later Farrar's Inc. Around the turn of the 20th century, amateur photography clubs were a popular past time, and Fred Farrar was one of the individuals who started the Augusta Camera Club in 1909. The club's president was Dr. L.W. Fargo, vice president was L.L. Higginson, and R.H. Murray, Farrar's business partner at the time, was the club's secretary. In 1911, Murphy and Farrar held an educational series sponsored by the Eastman Kodak Company.
