Biographical / Historical
The Authors’ Club of Augusta (also known as the Augusta Authors’ Club), formed on January 30th, 1928 as a regional club of Augusta writers who celebrate one another’s work and local literary arts through monthly meetings, workshops, and conferences. The club has featured prominent poets, novelists, historians, and journalists. Previous members include Louise Shivers, Starkey Flythe, and Edith Bell.
The Sand Hills Writers’ Conference, started in 1975, was an annual conference sponsored and housed by Augusta College’s Department of Languages and Literature, the Augusta College Division of Continuing Education, and the Author’s Club of Augusta. The Augusta Author’s club sponsored many aspiring writers attending the conference through the Jean Dewitt Fitz Memorial Fund. From its earliest iterations, the conference recruited professional authors to lead workshops and to have personal conferences where they critique manuscripts which are submitted by participants. The Conference hosted talent such as Tim O’Brien, Robert Anderson, Louise Shivers, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Nikky Finney, and others as faculty. For most of its duration, the conference was organized and managed by Anthony Kellman, Caribbean writer and professor of English at Augusta College. The conference later developed into the Sand Hills Writers Series.
