Biographical or Historical Information
James Gardner (1813-1874) was born in Augusta, GA, the son of James Gardner Sr. (1766-1847) and Elizabeth McKinnie (1784-1872) in Augusta, GA. Gardner attended the Richmond Academy and Union College, and later returned to study and practice law under George W. Crawford. He purchased "The Constitutionalist" and served as editor of that newspaper. Gardner married Martha Goodwin Sanford Jacob (1829-), and the couple had 8 children: Elizabeth, Mary, Burell, Jessie, Jordan, James, William, and Mattie.
