Biographical or Historical Information
Emily Harvie Thomas Tubman (1794-1885) was born in Ashland, Virginia and grew up in Kentucky as the ward of Henry Clay. While visiting Augusta, Ga in 1818, Tubman met and married Richard Tubman. Tubman was a prominent philanthropists, and was involved in emancipation efforts and education. In 1874, she endowed the Neely Institute, later renamed Tubman High School, the first high school for girls in Augusta, Georgia.
