Biographical or Historical Information

Hamburg, South Carolina was once a town in Edgefield District, now Aiken County, South Carolina. It was founded by Henry Schultz in 1821, across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia, as a cotton market town. The town saw less business in cotton shipping after the Augusta Canal was completed in 1848. Following the American Civil War, Hamburg was largely populated by freedmen, and became notorious in 1876 as a result of the Hamburg massacre, a massacre of freed men by local white men in a Democratic paramilitary group. The town's population began to decline after the events of the massacre, and flooding pushed out the last residents by 1929.
