Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, publications and photographs. The collection includes both materials related to the life and genealogy of of Ruby Mabry McCrary Pfadenhauer, as well as historic records of the Augusta Arsenal from the 19th century through the mid 20th century.

Biographical or Historical Information

Ruby May Mabry McCrary Pfadenhauer (1901/1902-1997) was born circa 1901/1902 in Augusta, GA., the daughter of Matthias Washington Mabry, a Civil War surgeon, and his wife, Angela Leopard Mabry. She attended Tubman High School in Augusta and graduated at 15. On September 16, 1925, Ruby Mabry was appointed as a clerk in the Ordnance Department at the Augusta Arsenal, Augusta, Georgia. She served in this capacity and later as Secretary to the Commander and Public Information Officer until 1955. In 1929, Ruby married Charles McCrary. Charles McCrary died in 1949. As part of her job duties as Public Information Officer, Ruby M. Pfadenhauer served as Historian and Special Writer of Augusta Arsenal. She reviewed all files of incoming and outgoing correspondence, reports, etc. and made decisions as to the importance of contents with respect to their incorporation into historical and statistical reports as well as to their retention in the permanent historical records. The arsenal records she preserved date from its establishment in 1816 to its closure in March, 1955. Pfadenhauer used this documentation and additional research on the history of the arsenal in preparation for writing her histories. After the closure of the Augusta Arsenal in 1955, Ruby became the public information officer at Fort Gordon, and remained in that position until her retirement in 1963. Towards the end of her career at Fort Gordon, Ruby began taking classes at Augusta College. After her retirement, Ruby began taking classes full time, and graduated in 1967 as a member of Augusta College's first baccalaureate class. In 1968, Ruby married Herman Pfadenhauer, a friend of her first husband. Ruby was an active member of many community organizations, especially those related to genealogy. Ruby May McCrary Pfadenhauer died in 1997.

This collection has grown over the years. Later accruals were added as seperate series to the collection. This series were originally processed as seperate collections, but all series were combined into one collection in 2018. The accruals in the collection are arranged as follows: Series I: acc# 1998.04 Series II: acc# 1998.04 Series III: acc# 2006.09 Series IV: acc# 2008.03 Series V: Acc# 2010.15
