Anonymous poetry scrapbook
Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of a single volume scrapbook of poetry, which most likely belonged to a Josephine Walton in the nineteenth century. The scrapbook includes materials related to poetry, and particulary to Southern poet, Paul Hamilton Hayne. Materials in the scrapbook include: newspaper clippings related to poetry and Paul Hamilton Hayne, correspondence, handwritten and typed copies of poems, clippings of published poems, and other small pamphelts and publications. A number of items reference Josephine Walton, or are addressed to her.

Biographical or Historical Information
Josephine Walton was born circa 1870 in Augusta, Georgia. She married Simeon Oliver Walton (1862-1949) in 1889. She taught history for the Richmond county public schools in the late nineteenth century. Josephine Walton was cited as being an "intimate friend" of Paul Hamilton Hayne's family in The South in History and Literature.
Paul Hamilton Hayne (1830-1886) was a nineteenth century Southern American poet from Charleston, SC.
