Biographical / Historical
Saint Paul’s Church is a historic Episcopal parish located in Augusta. Founded in 1750 during the colonial period, when the Church of England was the established church in the Province of Georgia, the congregation originated as a small chapel built near Fort Augusta. The parish is among the oldest religious institutions in the city and has long played an important role in Augusta’s civic and religious life.
Over time, five successive church buildings have stood on the Reynolds Street site. Earlier structures were damaged or destroyed during periods of conflict and disaster, including the American Revolutionary War and the Great Augusta Fire of 1916. The current church building was completed in 1919 and was designed by Augusta architect Henry Ten Eyck Wendell in a Georgian architectural style influenced by the work of English architect Christopher Wren.
Saint Paul’s has been significant in the development of Episcopal institutions in Georgia. In 1823 the parish hosted the convention that organized the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. The church also served the community in various civic capacities, including functioning as a hospital during the American Civil War. Its churchyard contains the graves of several notable historical figures, including William Few and former Georgia governor George Mathews.
Today, Saint Paul’s Church remains an active parish within the Episcopal Church and continues to serve the Augusta community through worship, outreach, and preservation of its historic site.
