Scope and Contents

Bulk of material refers to the Georgia & Florida Railroad, the Louis Battey American Legion Post no. 4, the Juvenile Court of Richmond County, Georgia, the Kiwanis Club and various youth baseball organizations; most notably the Victory Baseball League and the Jr. Baseball League. Bulk of material in Series II is related to the life of Mr. Glover Bailie Sr. and focuses on his service with the Troop K Richmond Hussars, his World War I Service and the Last Man’s Club.  Other material relates to the childhood of Mr. Glover Bailie Jr and to Mr. Bailie Jr’s personal research interests.  Of note is the sub-series Miss Nellie P. Green Letters (1911-1929) and the sub-series Photograph album of Elizabeth Goodyear Bailie.

Biographical or Historical Information

Deceased May 8, 1978, Glover Bailie was a native of Augusta Georgia and lived in Augusta for the majority of his life. He was a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County and saw service in the Mexican Conflict and World War I. In his working life, he was a district manager for the Georgia & Florida Railroad. His civic life included the following; a member and vestryman of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, a founder and post commander of Louis L. Battey American Legion Post no. 4, member of the Kiwanis Club, a member of Forty and Eight, a member of the Last Man’s Club, and Troop K Richmond Hussars and a president of the Henry Bible Class of St. John United Methodist Church. Glover Bailie Jr., born 1927, the son of Glover Bailie Sr. and Elizabeth Goodyear Bailie, was a student at William Robinson Elementary and the Academy of Richmond County where he was active in many extra-curricular activities including football. He spent two years in the Marine Corps  and graduated from the Citadel in 1950.  After a stint as the Citadel’s assistant athletic director and director of student affairs, he returned to Augusta.  in 1958.

This collection was previously cataloged as two seperate collections, the Bailie Collection, and the Bailie Collection Series II. In reviewing the deed of gift for Series II, it was determined that "Series II" was intended to be added as  an addition to the "Bailie Collection." These collections were combined and retitled the Bailie family papers in September, 2017.

This material was donated to Reese Library Special Collections, Augusta University in two accessions. The first accession was donated by the estate of Glover Bailie Sr. in 1978. Series II was donated to Reese Library Special Collections, Augusta University, as a later accession by Glover Bailie Jr. on  01/26/2010. Acc# 1978.03; 2007.05
