This collection is comprised of correspondence related to Andrew C. Cheek's request for compassionate/humanitarian transfer to Fort Gordon. The collection includes correspondence from Nezzie O. Cheek, Andrew Cheek's mother, as well as state senator Richard B. Russell, military leaders, and friends of the Cheek family.

Biographical or Historical Information

Andrew C. "Andy" Cheek (born Fred Ancil Cheek III) was a former Augusta District 6 Commissioner who passed away on March 10, 2023, at the age of 66. A native of South Augusta and graduate of Butler High School, he dedicated two terms to the Augusta Commission from 2000 to 2008, where he also chaired the Engineering Services committee. Outside of his public service, Cheek worked for more than 34 years as a research specialist at the Savannah River National Laboratory and spent over two decades coaching youth sports across Richmond County and North Augusta.
