Biographical / Historical
The Young Men’s Library Association (YMLA) was formed in 1848 with the goal of establishing a library and reading room in Augusta, GA. The YMLA were consistently looking for funding opportunities to keep the library open and eventually expand it. The YMLA originally ran the library as a subscription-based library until 1944 when the library qualified for state funding, leading it to operate as a free library. In 1973 the YMLA officially petitioned to resign their trust.
