This collection is comprised of the personal papers of Richard Reid, a newspaper writer, lawyer, and active Catholic who spent the majority of his adult life in Augusta, Ga.

Biographical or Historical Information
Richard Reid (1896-1961) was born on January 21, 1896 in Winchester, Massachusetts, the son of Michael Reid and Catherine Dee Reid. He received his BA from Holy Cross College in 1918. He received his Doctor of Letters from Fordham University in 1952, and an honorary Doctor of Laws from Spring Hill College in 1938.
An active member of the Catholic faith, Reid was named a Knight of Saint Gregory, and worked as an instructor at St. Francis Xavier College, as the Principal at the K.C. school for Ex-Service Men (1919-1920). He also served as the Editor of The Bulletin, a catholic newspaper for Southern states; as executive secretary for the Catholic Laymen's Association of Georgia (1920-1940); as Editor for The Catholic News (1940-1961); as a member of the law firm Mulherin & Reid in Augusta, GA (1930-1940), as a visiting lecturer at Notre Dame University; as Director of the George A. Plfaum Public Company, and as General Councel for the Catholic Press Association. Reid also served in the military, briefly, in 1918.
During 1933, Reid began a Holy Year pilgrimage to Europe, and wrote about his experiences for the Bulletin.
Reid married Katherine O'Leary on June 11, 1923, and the couple had five children: Peggy Dee, Kathleen, Richard Reid, James Dolan, and Thomas Joseph.
