Biographical or Historical Information

Mr. Roark was city manager of Augusta January 5, 1948-April 13,1948;May20, 1948- November 29,1948. Mr Roark, a professional city manager was at the Cracker Party and the Augusta Citizens Union, a reform-minded group. Although the voters approved the city manger form of government, the charter was declared invalid by the Georgia Supreme Court.

Overview

A collection of professional and working papers documenting the short tenrue of George J. Roark as city manager of Augusta, Georgia between 1947-1948. Contains financial, city planning, commission, and other administrative documentation. Also includes copies of the city charter of Augusta.

This collection is arranged into 3 series: 1. Bonds for City Improvements (plans to create better infastructure for the city), 2. City of Augusta Financial Materials (Budgets, audits, and financial reports), 4. General Materials (perosnal materials, misc.)

The collection is arranged thematically by series, then alphabetically at the folder level.

Custodial History

Collection was previously titled Roark, George J. Papers. Retitled 2017.
