Biographical or Historical Information
During WWII, Augusta, GA, became the home of the 19th Battalion of the U.S. Marine Core Reserves. Augusta was affected by this, as were the citizens of Augusta. Several Augustans became Admirals during WWII, and many other Augustans were lost. This collection provides a personal understanding of the men and women of Augusta involved in the U.S. Marine Core during WWII. In the early 1980s, then-president of the Augusta Richmond County Historical Society, John C. Hagler III, embarked on a project to document the experiences of WWII Marines in Augusta. He worked with A. Ray Rowland, Dr. Edward J. Cashin, and Ed Montgomery. This collection documents not only the experiences of the Augusta Marines of WWII, but also chronicles the process of creating the book, Reminiscenes of Augusta Marines.
