Scope and Contents
Letters, programs, and notes pertaining to arrangements for funding and preparations for the Cullum Lecture Series Of particular note is correspondence with Mrs. Natalie Cullum regarding the naming of the Lecture Series. The bulk of the material focuses on the 1984 Lecture Series on Japan. The files belonging to J. Gray Dinwiddie, Dean of Arts and Sciences include correspondence with the then Ambassador and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United Nations Tomohiko Kobayashi Atlanta Consul General of Japan Kagechika Matano, Mr. Koji Uchida, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer and Mr. Hide Kai Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Transco Textile Industries Ltd. There are also two copies of a City of Augusta Proclamation signed by Mayor Charles DeVaneyThe program started as the Cullum Visiting Scholars series in 1968. In 1973, the Cullum Third World Lecture Series, was also added. The bulk of the material deals with the Lecture series on Japan from 1983-1985. The majority of the Japan Lecture Series files are the professional correspondence of Dean J. Gray Dinwiddie in organizing this event. Dr. Dinwiddie (1923-2003) was Dean of Arts and Sciences of Augusta College from 1968-1988. He is considered a principle founder of the Cullum Lecture Series. The 2007 Lecture Series was entitled “A Year of Jazz and ASU” and dedicated to the memory of Dr. Dinwiddie.
