Scope and Contents

This collection includes material related to Joseph B. Cumming and Henry H. Cumming, including: manuscripts of "Reminiscences of Joseph B Cummings" and "A Northern Daughter and a Southern Wife" and correspondence regarding their publication; a paper read by James C.C. Block, President of Augusta Bar Assocation, at its annual meeting in Augusta on Jan. 13, 1903; and a paper written about Henry H. Cumming (1799-1899), and Joseph B. Cummings (1836-1922) by Bryan M. Halterman, a Cumming descendant.

Biographical or Historical Information

Henry Harford Cumming (1799-1866), was born in 1799, the son of Ann Clay and Thomas Cumming. He was a lifelong resident of Augusta, GA, and was actively involved in the legal, social, and economic affairs of that city during the antebellum period. He conceived of and promoted  the construction of the Augusta Canal. He married Julia Bryan, and the couple had one son, Thomas William Cumming, born in 1831. Henry Cumming dies on April 14, 1866, in Augusta, Georgia. Col. Joseph Bryan Cumming was born in Augusta, Ga., February 2, 1836. Graduating from the University of Georgia, with first honor in the class of 1854, he then studied law and was admitted to the bar. He later enlisted in the Confederate army. Colonel Cumming is remembered as the gallant speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives in the winter and summer of 1872, soon after the return of the Democrats to political supremacy in State affairs. Colonel Cumming passed away on May 15, 1922.

In addition, there is a paper by James C.C. Block, President of the Augusta Bar Association (1903) and a paper about Henry H. and Joseph B. Cumming.

The collections were combined in October 2017, as internal records indicate they were parts of the same donation. "Donation" All material was donated to Augusta University Reese Library Special Collection by an unknown donor except 1983.47.03 in December of 1983. 1983.47.03 was donated by Bryan Halterman. Acc#: 1983.47.01; 1983.47.02; 83.47.03
