Biographical or Historical Information
William Henry Fleming (1856-1944) was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1856, the son of Porter Fleming and Catherine Bathsheba Fleming. Fleming attended Summerville Academy, the Academy of Richmond County, and the University of Georgia. He served as the superintendent of the Augusta Richmond County public schools from 1877-1880. He practiced law in Augusta, beginning in 1880. He married Marie Celeste Ayer and the couple had two children, William Cornelius Fleming (1901-1971) and Virginia Fleming (1909-death unknown). Fleming also served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1888-1896. He served in Congress from 1897-1903. William H. Fleming died on June 9, 1944 and was buried in Summerville Cemetery.
