Biographical / Historical
The Habersham family was a prominent Georgia family active in the colony’s economic, political, and military life from the mid-eighteenth through early nineteenth centuries. The family patriarch, James Habersham (ca. 1712–1775), emigrated from England to Georgia in 1738 and became a merchant, planter, and colonial official, at one point serving as acting royal governor. His sons—James Jr., Joseph, and John—played significant roles during and after the American Revolution, with Joseph and John serving in the Continental army and later holding national and state offices. Joseph Habersham was appointed U.S. postmaster general under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. Across multiple generations, members of the family remained influential as planters, merchants, and public officials in Georgia, particularly in the Savannah region.
