This collection is comprised of records documenting the lifespan of the Campbell & Neilson Cotton Merchants company, including a correspondence ledger and a running accounts book between 1792-1806. The correspondence book contains personal Campbell family correspondence and business dealings of Campbell & Neilson featuring prominent Augusta families and buinsesses as wide-reaching as New York City. The account book contains debtors, charges, trades, and purchases.

Biographical / Historical
The Campbell & Neilson Cotton Merchant company was a combined business venture between two Scottish American businessmen in the Augusta area: John Campbell & John Neilson. Primarily, the duo dealt with cotton trading, but also national shipments and purchases. According to Augusta Chronicle archives, the duo also ran indivudal Dry Goods & Grocery businesses.

Appraisal
This is an artificial collection of two business record books from two accessions. The original accessions were not processed into a collection and instead hidden unmarked within other legal records. Upon discovery, these records were consolidated into a single collection to improve searchability & useability. While ARCHS 1978.69 was housed under MSS 008, it was determined that the book was a part of the ARCHS collection, and reprocessed accordingly.
