Biographical / Historical
Brevet Colonel Alexander C.W. Fanning (1788 – 1846) was a distinguished U.S. Army officer who served as the commanding officer of the Augusta Arsenal from 1827 to 1832. A 1812 West Point graduate and veteran of the War of 1812 and the First Seminole War, Fanning took command during a crucial transitional era for the Georgia post. Under his leadership, the Augusta Arsenal operated as a vital ordnance depot and strategic military hub for the region, where he directly oversaw garrison logistics, munitions maintenance, and the daily operations of the facility.
Colonel George Bomford (1780 – March 25, 1848) was a prominent military engineer and the second Chief of Ordnance of the U.S. Army who played an essential role in directing the administration of the Augusta Arsenal during its foundational decades. Famed for inventing the "Columbiad" coastal defense cannon, Bomford operated out of Washington, D.C., where he issued critical directives to commanders on the ground in Georgia. Throughout the 1820s and 1830s, he closely managed the logistics of the Augusta Arsenal
